Earthshot

Since first viewing on TV in 2021, I have been captivated by the Earthshot concept and all it contains and pertains to. In 2022 I watched the prizes awarded for the second year. Now I have the book. I am yet to finish it. https://earthshotprize.org/

And of course these are global issues much bigger and more important than me, but as I read I can feel it, that what is true for our actions towards the Earth are also true for the treatment of our inner lives too.

Like how it is possible to over-use a precious resource until it is depleted.

How some natural disasters and experiences leave scars and strip all the colour from the once vibrant thriving coral. Leaving what is left as bereft, bare.

How even so, there is still hope. That as we call an end to over-using a resource or aspect of ourselves, if we let it be, the scars can recover, albeit slowly, but still faster than we thought possible. If we stop relentlessly fishing and ban the ocean trawlers. If we no longer allow them in. Then everything can settle. And things may begin to come to life, and the colour return, and even the fish may come back. More than this, neighbouring species may be drawn to visit and absorb some goodness to carry away to renew other environments.

The landscape of the spiritual is like the landscape of the earth. I have extracted too much, applied too many tools, too many times, in a desperate attempt to understand life, living, and the soul. Turns out our souls, like our earth, are ultimately unknowable. The soul, like the earth, is best left wild and free. To just breath, grow, reproduce, nurture and be nurtured, re-use waste and turn it to flourishing. May we let go and allow ourselves to be moved through our own times of wintering to blossom and back again.
